The head of state noted that "no one intends to diminish the importance of the current Constitution, which has played a key role in the development of the country over the past three decades. Much of this is due to the first president Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev. However, it is important to remember that this law was adopted during the period of our country's formation, when Kazakhstan was just beginning to gain independence and faced many difficulties," Tokayev stated.
The president also pointed out the significant changes that have occurred in the country in recent years, which, according to him, have influenced national consciousness and caused serious social shifts. He added that updating the Constitution is necessary to actualize the goals and values of Kazakhstan.
The expanded government meeting, which is held annually under the chairmanship of the president, has become a traditional format for interaction with the Cabinet of Ministers.
On January 31, a draft of a new Constitution was presented in Kazakhstan, which is planned to be put to a referendum. The discussion of the document is taking place at meetings of a special commission. The proposed new Constitution includes a transition to a unicameral parliament, the creation of the post of vice president, the reform of advisory bodies, and a number of other innovations. The current Constitution was adopted in 1995.
