Scientists digitally reconstructed the face of a human ancestor aged 3.67 million years

Initially, the skeleton of "Little Foot" was discovered in 1994 in the Sterkfontein caves in South Africa, but its skull was severely damaged and deformed due to geological pressure. This circumstance made it impossible to analyze its face based on physical remains. In 2019, a team of researchers conducted high-precision scans of the skull at the Diamond Light Source synchrotron facility in the UK. Over the following years, scientists used semi-automatic methods and supercomputers for the digital extraction of bone fragments, resulting in the creation of a 3D reconstruction with a resolution of 21 microns.

“Now we have a high-quality reconstruction that we could not have obtained with a physical sample,” noted lead author Amélie Baudet, a paleoanthropologist from the PALEVOPRIM laboratory associated with CNRS in France.

The created facial reconstruction shows wide eye sockets and morphological features that are more characteristic of Australopithecus from East Africa than of samples found in South Africa. This discovery calls into question the migration routes of early hominids. One possible explanation, according to Science News, is that "Little Foot" may have belonged to a group that migrated from East Africa to South Africa more than 3.5 million years ago.

Baudet also emphasized that the small number of available Australopithecus skulls for comparison limits the conclusions that can be drawn. “Since we have only a few samples, we must be extremely cautious,” she added in an interview with Science News.

The team intends to continue working on the digital reconstruction of the remaining parts of "Little Foot's" skull, including the braincase and teeth, which may provide additional insights into the diet, biomechanics, and brain evolution of early hominins. The 3D model will be made available to the scientific community, allowing for further research.
