At a recent meeting in the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump compared the operation in Iran to the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, which caused confusion for Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takichi, reports the German publication Berliner Zeitung.

As noted by Bloomberg, Takichi's reaction was far from laughter: she pressed her lips together and looked at her advisors. The Telegraph reports that after an awkward silence, Trump added, "He’s asking me about a surprise, and we had one."

According to The New York Times, Takichi tried to avoid discussing Japan's involvement in U.S. operations in the Middle East by resorting to flattery and charm.

The newspaper quotes her as saying, "I am sure that only you, Donald, can ensure world peace."

Takichi also expressed confidence that "a strong Japan and a strong America, a prosperous Japan and a prosperous America" is a common goal achievable through their friendship, as noted by The Independent.

Although the conversation touched on sensitive topics, it was emphasized that the security of the Strait of Hormuz is of paramount importance. However, as Takichi explained, there are certain limitations under Japanese legislation, which required her to provide clarifications, as reported by The Guardian.

At the same time, the Japanese Prime Minister refrained from commenting on the legality of the U.S. attack on Iran in the context of international law.
