An international round table is being held on October 30 at the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, dedicated to the 190th anniversary of Chokan Valikhanov, an outstanding Kazakh scientist and traveler.
Outstanding researchers specializing in Valikhanov from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and the United Kingdom have gathered for the event to discuss Chokan Valikhanov's contributions to the study of Central Asia, China, and Russia.
The round table is organized with the financial support of the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) and the B. Jamgerchinov Institute of History, Archaeology, and Ethnology under the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as with the assistance of the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Kyrgyzstan.
Scientists will share their latest research and publications on Valikhanov's multifaceted legacy.
Among the speakers is Professor Zharas Ermekbay Akysuly from Astana, who will present a book about Valikhanov based on new archival data. The President of Almaty University, Asylbek Kozhakmetov, will share insights from an expedition to Kashgar and his scientific discoveries. British journalist and translator Nick Fielding will discuss his findings regarding the translation of Valikhanov's works into English, which he carried out in London in 1865. Kazakh historian Fakiya Shamsidenova will highlight the topic of Valikhanov's research on Turkic tribes in Siberia, while Kyrgyz scholar Tynchtykbek Chorotegin will present a paper on the significance of the translation of the Kyrgyz version of the epic "Manas," recorded by Valikhanov in Arabic script in 1856.
Participants of the round table will also visit an exhibition dedicated to Valikhanov and other famous Kazakhs of Kyrgyzstan, which is taking place at the G. Aitiev National Museum of Fine Arts, opened with the support of the Embassy of Kazakhstan in the country, as well as an exhibition at the Kyrgyz Historical Museum, organized with the assistance of the State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
