On September 30, 2014, a round table is planned to discuss issues related to the problem of household waste disposal, including discussions on the draft Strategy for Solid Waste Management and draft documents on the collection and disposal of plastic waste.
In accordance with the Action Plan for the implementation of the Program for the Kyrgyz Republic's transition to sustainable development for 2013-2017, the State Agency is developing a draft Strategy for Solid Waste Management and a draft Procedure for the collection and disposal of plastic waste.
It should be noted that this is not the first attempt by the government of Kyrgyzstan to modernize the waste processing industry. The possibility of banning plastic and polyethylene bags in the country's supermarkets and prohibiting the import of certain types of bags has been raised. However, the problem of solid waste disposal remains relevant today, especially concerning plastic waste.
Researchers have calculated that a single-use shopping bag lasts from 12 to 20 minutes. More than a trillion such bags are produced worldwide each year. However, it takes 400 years for one to decompose.
In this regard, the State Agency has conducted an analysis of international experiences from other countries and an assessment of the existing situation regarding plastic waste management in the country in order to prepare recommendations and establish a procedure for managing plastic waste.
