The Embassy of Hungary in Bishkek has announced the Hungarian Film Days, scheduled for November 3-5 and November 10. 

As part of this event, viewers will be offered outstanding works of Hungarian cinema created by renowned directors. These films, based on real events and destinies, tell the rich history of Hungary through the lens of the personal stories and memories of the main characters.

Film screenings will take place at the Kyrgyz State University named after I. Arabaev and the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy named after I. Akhunbaev.

November 3, Monday, 17:00 – Opening of the Hungarian Film Days

“Diary for My Children,” 1982 

Genre: Drama, Duration: 1 hr 46 min, Director: Márta Mészáros

This film won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 1984.

The first part of Márta Mészáros' famous trilogy. The main character, Júlia (Jüji), lost her parents during the repressions in the Soviet Union and returned to Hungary after 1945. She tries to adapt to her new life and establish a relationship with the woman who adopted her, Magda, who is trying to instill in her a belief in communism.

“Diary for My Loved Ones,” 1987 

Genre: Drama, Duration: 2 hr 23 min, Director: Márta Mészáros

The film was awarded the Silver Prize at the 37th Berlin Film Festival.

This is a continuation of the autobiographical trilogy. The action takes place in the 1950s, where the main character studies directing in Moscow and searches for her place in the world. Mészáros skillfully combines artistic footage with real clips from Soviet and Hungarian chronicles, creating an emotionally rich narrative.

“Semmelweis,” 2023 

Genre: Historical Drama, Duration: 2 hr 07 min, Director: Lajos Koltai 

The film is based on the life of Ignaz Semmelweis, a 19th-century Hungarian doctor. The events unfold in Vienna in 1847, when a mysterious epidemic of postpartum fever rapidly claims the lives of young mothers. Semmelweis, passionate about his work, seeks to uncover the causes of the disease but faces resistance from conservative colleagues who reject his innovative ideas.

November 10, Monday, 15:00 - Film screening in the Conference Hall of the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy named after I. Akhunbaev (Bishkek, I. Akhunbaev St., 92)
