On Alabakova Street, house number 155 (165) in Karakol, located in the Issyk-Kul region, a historical building has been discovered, as reported by the city administration.

According to the administration, this structure dates back to the period of 1918-1920 and holds an important place in the history of Karakol (which was previously known as Przhevalsk). In 1918-1919, the Extraordinary Commission of the Przhevalsk District was located here, created to combat counter-revolution in the context of the Civil War, shortly after the establishment of Soviet power in the region. At that time, the Cheka performed vital functions aimed at ensuring internal security and combating sabotage, counter-revolution, and other threats that could undermine the young Soviet state. The activities of the local Cheka in Przhevalsk symbolized a complex and critical historical period when the region experienced sharp socio-political changes against the backdrop of the decline of the Russian Empire and the establishment of Soviet power.

It is believed that the building was chosen for the commission due to its convenient location and sturdy construction. It may have been one of the old brick merchant or administrative buildings that could accommodate staff and have all the necessary facilities for record-keeping and interrogations.

Over time, the building changed its purpose, like many other historical objects from the pre-revolutionary and early Soviet periods. It served as residential premises, institutions, and organizations. Nevertheless, the building retains its significant historical importance as a witness to the revolutionary and post-revolutionary past of Karakol.

Currently, this house stands as a silent witness to the turbulent era experienced by the city in the early 20th century and is regarded as an element of the local historical heritage,” the message noted.

This building is listed in the register of architectural monuments of regional significance, and it has a protective zone within which new construction that could alter the historical appearance of the area is prohibited. Coordination is also required for any repair and restoration work.
