In the Issyk-Kul region, in the city of Karakol, there is a significant Dungan mosque.

The building is located at the corner of J. Abdrakhmanov and Bektenov streets and is named after Ibrahim Azhy.

According to historical data, the initiator and financial sponsor of the construction was Ibrahim Azhy, whose real name is Ma-Yu-Ton.

“To build the mosque, he invited the famous architect from Beijing, Zhou Si, as well as 20 Chinese wood craftsmen with deep knowledge of traditional Chinese construction and composition. Local artisans also participated in the construction of auxiliary buildings. The construction began in 1904 and was completed in 1907,” the sources note.

The unique system of cuts allowed for the avoidance of metal fasteners, as the building is supported by 42 pillars. The decor of the multi-level wooden cornice includes carvings depicting grapes, pomegranates, pears, and peaches. From 1929 to 1947, during the Soviet regime, the mosque was used as a warehouse.

In 1947, the building was handed over to the local Muslim community and continues to function as a mosque, serving as the central mosque of Karakol. The building is also registered as a historical monument protected by law,” the message states.
