Ravat Abdullah Khan Mosque

Ravat Abdullah Khan Mosque. A monumental cult building. The main facade of the mosque, facing east, featured a symmetrical three-arch composition, culminating in a high pointed dome. Three deep monumental arches formed three pointed niches with depths ranging from 3 to 4 meters.

The arches rested on powerful pylons with thicknesses ranging from 125 to 162 cm. The niches provided deep shade, emphasizing the expressive relief of the building's facade. The architectural decor on the facade has not survived.

The mosque is rectangular in shape, measuring 16 x 27 meters. The wall thickness varies from 1 to 2.5 meters. The central part of the mosque is accentuated by a high dome.

The open central room with a high dome, located along the axis of the main facade, is covered by a pointed dome. The diameter of the dome is about 4 meters. The height of the central room from the floor to the apex of the dome is about 12 meters. The central dome served as a summer room, while the side ones were winter rooms. The winter rooms were illuminated through narrow lattice windows.

The mosque was built from durable tile bricks on a loess mortar with an admixture of gancha. The interior walls and domes are plastered with gancha mortar. It is possible that the walls were adorned with floral and geometric ornamentation.

Judging by the style and character of the architectural forms and decor, as well as the constructions, building materials, and techniques of ancient builders, this mosque, as defined by V. E. Nusov, was constructed in the spirit of the Fergana architectural school in the late 16th century or the first half of the 17th century, and was subsequently repaired and reconstructed multiple times until the early 20th century.

The Ravat Abdullah Khan Mosque is of particular historical and cultural interest as a monument of Fergana's late medieval architecture. Similar structures have not survived in Southern Kyrgyzstan to date, thus it is subject to preservation and restoration and can be used as a cultural and historical site.

The architectural survey of the Ravat Abdullah Khan Mosque was conducted in 1963 by architect V. E. Nusov, who also developed the project for the reconstruction and restoration of the complex.

In the summer of 1984, during earthworks at the site in front of the eastern facade of the mosque, remnants of previously existing structures were discovered. Referring to pre-revolutionary photographic documents suggests that the Ravat Abdullah Khan Mosque had a significant-sized annex. It was rectangular in shape and included an open courtyard with a house for ablution and two iwans on the southern and western sides. The facade of the annex featured a high traditional portal and two minarets. Its architecture undoubtedly belongs to the late period of architectural development in Fergana — the Kokand era — of the 18th to 19th centuries.

Archaeological excavations conducted by students of the Osh Pedagogical Institute under the guidance of local historian E. V. Druzhinina and Leningrad archaeologist Yu. A. Zadneprovsky uncovered a medieval residential complex with a bathhouse and water bodies, providing rich archaeological material.
