Recently, an annual tree planting event organized by the Public Association of Gardeners "Maki" took place on the banks of the Ken-Tor River in the Issyk-Ata region.

This year, participants planted seedlings of rare species such as the Semyonov fir, Tien Shan spruce, and common pine. These local species were recommended by specialists and grown in the Toktogul Forestry, which increases their chances of successful acclimatization in the climatic conditions of Kyrgyzstan.

Such initiatives are particularly significant for Kyrgyzstan, as floodplain ecosystems are among the most vulnerable. They play a key role in regulating river water regimes, retaining soil, creating local microclimates, and are home to numerous species of flora and fauna. However, it is in urban areas that these ecosystems face threats from development, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity.

Against this backdrop, the work of activists striving to restore the natural environment becomes especially noticeable. The "Maki" association, which originated over 40 years ago as a gardening cooperative, today serves as an example of successful transformation into a community focused on nature protection, based on a scientific approach and collective responsibility.

As part of their efforts, they are creating a small micro-reserve where participants refrain from activities harmful to ecosystems and actively work on restoring biodiversity. In the summer of 2025, an ecological inventory was conducted in collaboration with the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, confirming the high natural value of the area and the presence of protected species. This opens up prospects for obtaining the status of a botanical reserve or a scientific-educational site.

One of the main areas of work for "Maki" is environmental education. Their territory has become a venue for events organized by NGOs, zoological clubs, botanical excursions, and scientific observations, demonstrating that conservation management can be effective even without significant budgets and administrative control.

The experience of the Public Association "Maki" confirms that nature conservation is not solely the prerogative of state structures. When people recognize their responsibility to future generations and are willing to act, even small initiatives can significantly improve the environment.
