By the end of 2025, Kyrgyz films captured more than half of the country's box office market. In the list of the ten highest-grossing films, nine spots belong to domestic productions, while the only Hollywood film that made it to this ranking was "Formula 1" starring Brad Pitt.

The most successful films were "Kudai Saktasyn," "Bitir," and "Kereksin." This year, 72 Kyrgyz films were released in theaters, and according to forecasts from "Kyrgyztasmasy," their number may reach 100 in 2026.

What contributed to this success?

Almaz Tulekeyev, the director of "Kyrgyztasmasy," noted that there has been a trend of increasing popularity for domestic cinema over the past two to three years. Kazakhstan is showing similar results in Central Asia.

"The main reason for the success is tax incentives. Filmmakers pay only 4% of a single tax, and for residents of the Creative Industries Park, this rate is reduced to 2%. Thus, with an income of one million soms, the tax will amount to only about 20,000. This all happens within the framework of the law, and the state actively supports us, setting the task of developing local content. It has become easier and more profitable to open a studio and start filming," he explained.

As a result of these conditions, around 80 production studios are operating in the country, and their number continues to grow.

Strengths of Kyrgyz Cinema

Although Kyrgyz cinema cannot yet compete with Hollywood or Indian blockbusters in terms of visual effects, the lack of specialists in complex software affects quality. However, a strong point remains the unique stories and scripts that resonate with the local audience.

"A new generation of actors has emerged, including bloggers, who actively attract viewers to theaters. The debates about bloggers acting in films instead of professional actors are a normal practice worldwide. Training is systematic: five universities and colleges train directors, screenwriters, cameramen, and actors," Tulekeyev added.

Moreover, local teams have already begun working at the international level: some are creating series for China, while others are involved in stunt scenes in Vietnam and collaborating with creators of Turkish historical dramas.

What films are being made in Kyrgyzstan?

Comedy remains the most popular genre, accounting for about 40% of the domestic repertoire. Comedies often achieve the best box office results, despite this genre being considered one of the most challenging.

According to four cinemas, the highest-grossing film turned out to be "Zootopia 2," followed by "Partners 3." However, it is worth noting that the box office is still ongoing, and positions may change. Following them are "Formula 1," "Bitir," "Ashygym," and other films, as shared by sources.

Foreign interest in filming in Kyrgyzstan

Favorable tax conditions, such as a 4% tax, and unique natural locations attract foreign companies. Films and music videos from Russia, Kazakhstan, India, and Iran have already been shot in Kyrgyzstan.

"We now have local companies that work in English and Chinese. These are Kyrgyz specialists capable of fully supporting foreign filming crews," emphasizes Almaz Tulekeyev.

One of the main advantages remains the natural locations, such as Issyk-Kul, mountain peaks, jailoos, and unique wildlife, including rare white butterflies.

The future of Kyrgyz cinema

According to the director, in the next two to three years, the position of national cinema will only strengthen. This is due to the growth of professionalism in the industry, the increasing number of production companies, and the activity of young producers and directors, whose average age is about 35 years.

An additional factor is the steady growth of audience interest in cinemas. The culture of going to the movies is maintained in Kyrgyzstan, and the number of viewers continues to grow not only in Bishkek but also in the regions. Even in small towns and villages, despite any weather conditions, people continue to visit cinemas, making the construction of new halls economically justified.

Against this backdrop, the government and private investors continue to develop regional cinema infrastructure by opening new cinemas and multifunctional cultural centers. Combined with the growth of national film production, this allows Kyrgyz films to maintain their positions in the market and effectively compete with foreign content.
