Russians Bought Up All the Kumys in Anticipation of the Year of the Fire Horse

In the run-up to the New Year according to the Eastern calendar, which will be the Year of the Fire Horse, Russians are rapidly purchasing kumis. Since 2023, its consumption has nearly doubled, as reported by the publication "Baza".

According to analysts from "Chestny Znak," sales of kumis, a traditional drink made from mare's milk, exceeded 1.3 million liters in 2025. It is also noted that over the past two years, the number of sellers of this fermented dairy product has increased by 35%.

Kumis is most popular in Bashkortostan, where this region has ranked first in sales for the third consecutive year. By the end of the current year, there will be 155.27 liters of the drink per 1,000 people in the republic. The top five regions with the highest kumis consumption also include Yakutia (73.11 liters per 1,000 people), the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (46.49 liters), the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (34.31 liters), and Tatarstan (25.8 liters).
