In the Chui region, farmers are facing problems with delivering milk to processing plants, which is related to the spread of an unknown disease among cows. Local residents associate the worsening situation with this disease.

Elmira Abdyjaparova, a farmer from the region who has been engaged in dairy farming for many years, shared her concerns in an interview with Turmush: “There is an outbreak of the disease in our farms. The cows have a high temperature, they become restless and suffer from ulcers on their mouths and legs. This year the situation is much worse than in previous years. Some of my cows have also been sick, but they have already recovered. We stop delivering milk when the animals have health problems. It has been reported that the vaccine used this year has proven ineffective, which has worsened the situation. Because of this, Kazakhstan has closed its borders, and we cannot obtain livestock from Russia. As a result, prices for animals have increased, which will undoubtedly affect the cost of meat. It is important for the Cabinet of Ministers to closely monitor the health of livestock and conduct vaccinations, as some owners may skimp on treatment,” she noted.

In the Issyk-Ata district, representatives of the local administration reported that one of the largest dairy enterprises in the country continues to accept milk from farmers. A dairy plant in Kant is also operational. According to them, the situation regarding the disease remains stable, all suspicious animals are under the supervision of veterinarians, and vaccinations are ongoing. Milk is purchased at these enterprises at a price ranging from 42 to 44 soms, depending on its fat content.

The Sokuluk district administration also confirmed that three dairy plants in their area continue to collect milk from farmers. The situation with the disease has stabilized: veterinarians are monitoring all suspicious animals and conducting vaccinations. Milk is accepted at a price ranging from 42 to 47 soms, depending on fat content.

In mid-February 2026, farmers from the At-Bashinsky district of the Naryn region reported a mass illness of cows with a severe form of an unknown disease. They expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of attention from the authorities to this problem.

Aybek Jumaliev, a resident of the village of Kalinin, said: “This time the disease has manifested in a very severe form. Previously, it mainly affected the mouth, but now it affects the udder and hooves, making it difficult for the livestock to move normally. The condition of the animals is critical.

Farmers are in despair and do not know what to do. The disease is progressing, and if measures are not taken immediately, the situation may worsen. Now it has also started to spread to sheep.

For example, I have five sick cows and five calves, my brother has ten sick cows, and also sick calves. If you ask in neighboring villages, the picture is similar everywhere — it is estimated that up to 80% of the livestock is already sick,” he added.

Ulanbek Sokeev, a resident of the At-Bashinsky district, shared the following observations:

“Currently, not only cows are sick, but also sheep, even young lambs. The injections being given are not helping. People are losing their animals and incurring losses. Pastures are becoming contaminated. It is necessary to organize systematic work on the destruction and disposal of dead livestock.

It is important to find out why the medications in veterinary pharmacies are not working. There is an impression that there is no control over where these drugs come from and how they enter Kyrgyzstan.

There is also the question: what will happen if the meat of emaciated livestock or animals that have been slaughtered before they die is sent for processing in the “sausage shop”? Will people not get sick from this? It is unknown if anyone is thinking about this. The disease in livestock may pose a threat to humans,” he noted.

To obtain complete information, we contacted the Naryn regional veterinary department. They confirmed the presence of cases of livestock disease and reported that specialists are taking the necessary measures. Currently, laboratory tests are being conducted at the A. Duyshiev Scientific Institute to clarify the diagnosis.

Kenzhebek Kachkynbaev, the deputy akim of the At-Bashinsky district for agriculture, added:

“This unknown disease has started to be registered throughout the republic. It arrived in our district last week. This is a new type of disease that spreads faster than previous ones. A vaccine for cows has not yet been administered.

In our experience, with timely treatment using penicillin, bicillin, and special sprays, recovery can be achieved.

Previously, cases of the disease were recorded in Chui and other regions. Now the disease is affecting the Naryn region as well, but there are also recovering animals. If the vaccine arrives soon, we will be able to cover all livestock, and the situation will stabilize.”

The veterinary service for the development of animal husbandry, pastures, and feed under the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry reported that complete information will be provided next Monday, as laboratory tests are currently being conducted.

No response has yet been received from the Veterinary Service for the Development of Animal Husbandry, Pastures, and Feed.
