Tamga, Climate and Mud Sanatorium of the Ministry of Defense
Located in the Jeti-Oguz district of the Issyk-Kul region, 330 km southeast of Bishkek, 75 km from Karakol, 39 km west of the village of Kyzyl-Suu, and 148 km from the railway station of Balykchy. It is situated at an altitude of 1684 m above sea level.
The climate is moderately continental. Winters are mild, with an average temperature of -2°C in January. Summers are warm, with an average temperature of about +18°C in July. Precipitation averages about 250 mm per year, mainly from May to July. The number of sunshine hours is 2800 hours per year. The average annual relative humidity is 58%.
The park surrounding the treatment and residential buildings features various species of trees and shrubs. The enclosures house pheasants, partridges, chukars, and roe deer. There are therapeutic walking paths from the park to the lake. A therapeutic beach is equipped on the shore of the lake, and there is a boat station. A tourist base (360 places) operates near the resort.
Along with the climate, the main natural healing factor is the sulfide mud, which is located 8 km west of the village of Tamga on the coast and in the waters of the Ak-Chiy Bay of Lake Issyk-Kul (reserves of 40.9 thousand tons). In addition to mud therapy, climate and thalassotherapy (sun and air baths, lake swimming), water and electrotherapy, therapeutic gymnastics, massage, and others are used.
A Bit of History
On the calm and sparsely populated southern shore of the lake, at an altitude of 1680 meters above sea level, lies the famous climate and mud sanatorium Tamga. It is located near the village of the same name, close to a large source of healing sulfide mud. This deposit was discovered in the early last century, and the construction of the unique Tamga sanatorium began in the 1930s. During the Great Patriotic War, wounded officers from the front underwent treatment and rehabilitation at the Tamga sanatorium. After the war, the sanatorium remained a specialized military institution for the rest and treatment of officers for a long time. At one time, almost the entire composition of the Soviet Army's generals visited here. Cosmonauts also came here – after complex space flights, they underwent rehabilitation here. Among them was the famous space pioneer – Yuri Gagarin.
Throughout its existence, the sanatorium has been constantly expanded and improved. One of its main attractions – the huge staircase to the beach with 125 steps – was built by Japanese prisoners of war who were brought here after the Russo-Japanese War. This staircase is not just a beautiful architectural element of the sanatorium; it is also a wonderful cardio workout – climbing the one hundred and twenty steps in the fresh wind at high-altitude conditions mobilizes the body's physical reserves, increases breathing, accelerates blood circulation, filling the entire body with oxygen.
KINDS OF PHYSIOTHERAPEUTIC TREATMENT:
Electro and Light Therapy. Treatments include: galvanization and electrophoresis of medications, DDT and SMT therapy, inductotherapy, darsonvalization, franklinization, UHF therapy, magnetotherapy, light therapy, laser therapy, microwave therapy.
Inhalation Therapy. Oil and saline inhalations with Kochkor salt are conducted.
Hydrotherapy is divided into bath, shower departments, and an underwater shower-massage room.

Mud Therapy, with separate male and female halls and rest rooms.
Climate Therapy. There is no exhausting heat that tires vacationers in Crimea. Climate therapy at the sanatorium is conducted in the form of air and sun baths, prolonged stays in the fresh air by the lake, mountain walks, morning gymnastics, and outdoor sports games. Sea bathing is of great importance for health improvement. The water composition is close to that of the sea, with a slightly bitter-salty taste.
Massage Treatment: classical massage is prescribed daily for 10 days. The physiological effect is due to complex neuro-reflex and humoral changes in internal organs through the mechanisms of motor-visceral reflexes.
Mud Treatment. The mechanism of action of mud on the human body produces analgesic, resorptive, and warming effects. It improves blood supply and innervation of tissues in specific areas of the body.
Water Electrotherapy has wide applications: coniferous, pearl, as well as in the form of showers: circular, Charcot shower, needle, hydromassage.
Electric Light Therapy: electrophoresis, magnetotherapy, DDT.
The effectiveness of treatment is over 90% of patients discharged with improvement.
We offer 1, 2, 3, and 4-bed rooms in the sanatorium buildings and cottages, "Lux" rooms with all necessary amenities: from a telephone and TV to a service set for 6 people.
Vacationers are accommodated in buildings, in comfortable double and triple rooms, which have everything necessary for a full rest. Standard rooms are equipped with necessary furniture, while semi-luxury and luxury rooms have separate bathrooms with shower cabins and hot water, as well as TVs and refrigerators. In addition to the buildings, separate cottages of increased comfort have been built on the territory of the sanatorium, with convenient bathrooms, cozy living rooms, and well-equipped kitchens. They also have refrigerators and satellite television. Four meals a day are maximally balanced, and there are also special therapeutic tables. On the territory of the Tamga sanatorium on Issyk-Kul, there are well-equipped sports grounds for basketball or volleyball, as well as tables for tennis and billiards. For active recreation enthusiasts, there is a rental point for sports equipment and various tourist gear.
