Online voting will not be implemented in Kyrgyzstan for now

President Sadyr Japarov announced this decision at the first meeting of the VIII convocation of the Jogorku Kenesh.

At the meeting, the president noted that the implementation of online voting in Kyrgyzstan at this time is a premature step.

The head of state spoke about his recent discussions with international observers regarding this initiative. He concluded that online voting may not only fail to meet expectations but could also create opportunities for vote manipulation.

Sadyr Japarov emphasized that unscrupulous candidates could use electronic voting to bypass homes and buy votes. He also mentioned that after the recent elections, he reviewed materials and video recordings documenting instances of vote trading, which ultimately convinced him to postpone the implementation of this system.

“Only when candidates, politicians, and citizens become more responsible can we consider the possibility of introducing online voting,” the president added.

Until then, he said, it is necessary to focus on refining the Electoral Code and addressing shortcomings in the current legislation.
