Economist on Bishkek: Vegetables used to grow here, now there are houses

How to cope with the overcrowding of the capital?

Economist Asylbek Ayupov believes that the authorities need to reconsider their approaches to internal migration. In an interview with Vesti.kg, he expressed concern about the mass relocation of citizens of Kyrgyzstan to Bishkek and the Chui region, which, in his opinion, could lead to serious consequences.

Ayupov, who is a professor and doctor of economic sciences, emphasized the importance of developing regions that have significant potential. "It is necessary to focus on the industrial, urban, and agricultural development of small towns. Limiting the relocation of citizens to one large city is extremely important, as it affects not only environmental and health issues but also the economic sustainability of Kyrgyzstan. Industrial development should be directed towards the entire country, not just the capital," he noted.

According to Ayupov, due to the increasing number of residents, the authorities are forced to build on lands that were previously used for agriculture. "Vegetables used to be grown on these plots, and now houses are being built. What will happen next? How long will the infrastructure hold up? People want to develop their homes, and appropriate conditions need to be created for this," he added.
