Kubanychbek Zhekshenbekov: "Ala-Archa" is becoming a global tourist hub

The Ala-Archa National Park has always held special significance for the people of Kyrgyzstan, representing not just a geographical point, but a place to rejuvenate and enjoy the beauty of nature. Currently, the park is undergoing one of the most significant transformations in its history. Deputy Director Kubanychbek Zhekshenbekov shared details with our publication about how they are managing to connect untouched nature with modern technologies.

- Mr. Kubanychbek, in recent years, "Ala-Archa" has been attracting more and more attention. How did this large-scale transformation begin?

- The long-awaited changes became possible only by 2025, when we made the decision to close the park to cars. Access is now allowed only for electric vehicles. "Ala-Archa" has now become a true refuge for pedestrians. You can't imagine how the atmosphere has changed: the noise of engines and the smell of exhaust fumes have disappeared, and the mountain silence has returned, for which people are willing to travel great distances.

The economic indicators are also encouraging: over the past three years, the park's income has increased almost fourfold — from 65.8 million to 262.7 million soms. These figures are not just numbers for us, but an opportunity to develop and protect nature without waiting for government support.

- The cable car has become a symbol of these new changes. What are the feelings of the passengers?

- It offers a completely different view of the gorge. In early February, we opened the first kilometer of the cable car built by the Austrian company Doppelmayr. Now, in just a few minutes, guests can ascend to an altitude of 2400 meters. We have 16 modern cabins, including VIP versions, offering stunning views of the mountains.

But this is just the beginning. In the future, we plan to build a 23-kilometer cable car and a 12-kilometer gondola line that will connect the checkpoint with the future "Pyramid" hotel.

- What other international innovations will appear in the gorge?

- We strive to adopt the best ideas from global leaders. Our park will feature a German rodelbahn, allowing you to race down the slope at speeds of up to 45 km/h. It will be incredible! Additionally, at the initiative of Kanaybek Tumanbaev, we are finalizing negotiations with Chinese partners to build a glass bridge, which will become a true attraction. Tourists are already coming to us from 126 countries, and with such attractions, "Ala-Archa" will be able to compete with the most famous resorts in the world.

- Where will guests who want to greet the dawn in the mountains be accommodated?

- Construction is in full swing. Soon, at the height of Tepchey, a five-star hotel will open with various amenities, including spas and restaurants. Moreover, we have already built 20 cozy A-frame cabins at an altitude of 2500 meters for eco-style enthusiasts.

We also have our traditional hotels "Adygen" and "Ak-Bata," which can get quite crowded on weekends — on peak days, the park receives up to 10,000 people. We strive to ensure that everyone finds a place in a café or hotel.

- Are you not worried about the influx of visitors for the forest inhabitants?

- Surprisingly, the animals are gradually getting used to the new conditions. Recently, we observed wild boars coming out to the road, and herds of mountain goats descending to the river to drink. We are expanding the protected area — last year we added another 200,000 hectares. On April 4, we will organize a mass tree planting, which will be our contribution to the future of the park.

Bears also live here, but they avoid people and stay at higher altitudes. We educate tourists that we are guests here, and if you encounter a wild animal, it's better not to make noise or sudden movements — just let it pass.

- "Ala-Archa" has always been a home for climbers. Does this tradition continue?

- Absolutely! This is the soul of our park. Every day at five in the morning, when most tourists are still asleep, groups of climbers set out to conquer Peak Korona or Mugalim. We have experienced guides who pass on these traditions from generation to generation.

- What does "Ala-Archa" personally mean to you at this time?

- It is a place to disconnect from the daily hustle and simply breathe. I always tell our guests: come not only to see but also to feel the mountains. We have created comfortable conditions, while preserving the silence and grandeur of nature in its pristine form. Come, enjoy, and return to yourself.
