The first closed section is the Den Xiaoping Avenue. Currently, there are no serious traffic jams there, but this is just the beginning: soon other streets will be closed for repairs one after another. According to the plans of the city hall and the Ministry of Transport, one should not expect peace on the roads.
Construction of New Roads and Changes on Profsoyuznaya Street
This year, the authorities of Bishkek intend to modernize and build 119 kilometers of roads, including 12 new ones (18.8 km) and the repair of 115 existing streets (100.2 km). Among the main projects is the construction of the Eastern Bypass Road and the first transport interchange at the intersection of Young Guard Avenue and Leo Tolstoy Street. However, it is not only the city hall that will be engaged in road works; the Ministry of Transport and Communications also has its ambitious plans for continuing the reconstruction of already started highways and implementing new projects.
On the map of future repairs and constructions, the situation looks bleak: access to the capital will again become a problem, as traffic will be restricted on almost all highways leading to the city.
The Ministry is also responsible for the bypass road project on Profsoyuznaya Street from Kustanayskaya Street to the traffic police post (8.5 km). This project has been discussed for four years, and the initial plans caused a lot of controversy, as part of the road passed through a cemetery. This year, the issue was raised again, and in early February 2026, residents of Novopavlovka reported that the demolition of the cemetery was planned due to the road expansion. The mayor of Bishkek, Aibek Junushaliev, met with residents, and based on the discussion, it was decided to lay the road around the cemetery taking into account the interests of local residents and sanitary safety.
"The project provides for four traffic lanes, each 3.5 m wide, with a total roadway width of 17.5 m and a central dividing strip 5 m wide. Sidewalks 2.25 m wide will also be arranged, and an outdoor lighting system will be installed. For quality drainage, the installation of 9,143 drainage channels is planned," the Ministry of Transport reported.
The reconstruction of the road from Manas Airport to the Bishkek SEZ to the Ala-Archa reservoir (11 km) is also planned. This year, the repair of a 2.7 km section of the EM-14 road from Bishkek to Manas International Airport is scheduled.
Work will also continue on highways where reconstruction began last year: Arashan - Chunkurchak, Lebedinovka - HPP-5, Bishkek - Kant, and Bishkek - Kuntuu - Shopokov.
Preparation for the Summit and the Nomad Games
Not only Bishkek is expecting serious road works: this year Kyrgyzstan is preparing for two important events — the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit and the World Nomad Games. Preparations are underway not only in the capital but also in the Issyk-Kul region. In early February, the construction of a bypass road began in Cholpon-Ata, funded from the budget with the contractor being China Road and Bridge Corporation.Roads in the Grigorievsky (Grigorievka - Kol - Kashka-Suu) and Semenovsky (Semenovka - Ak-Suu) gorges leading to the Kychyn tract will also be asphalted. The total length of both roads is 34 km. Last year, asphalt was completely laid on a 6 km section of the Semenovka - Ak-Suu road, and preparatory work was completed and the first layer of asphalt was laid on the Grigorievka - Kol - Kashka-Suu section. In 2025, blasting works, widening of the roadway, and installation of drainage pipes were carried out. The project also includes the repair of five bridges, two of which have already been completed.
"From March 15, 2026, weather permitting, it is planned to continue work on the remaining 28 km, including foundation preparation and asphalting. The project completion is expected on July 1, 2026," the Ministry of Transport reported.
In the Ak-Suu district of the Issyk-Kul region, the construction of the road to the Ala-Tuu Resort continues. In 2025, earthworks, widening of the roadway, and compaction of the road surface were completed on an 8.5 km section from the village of Jyrgalan to the resort. This year, earthworks and road widening, installation of drainage pipes, and foundation preparation will continue.
Foundation preparation and asphalt concrete paving are planned to be completed by autumn 2026.
Other Roads Under Repair
A major overhaul of the Osh - Sary-Tash - Irkeshtam road (61 km) is also planned for 2026."The project provides for the construction of a four-lane road with metal dividing barriers to enhance safety. The road surface design is rated for an axle load of up to 11.5 tons, and outdoor lighting will also be installed at the Irkeshtam checkpoint and in the surrounding area," the Ministry of Transport reported.
This year, the repair of 45 km of the Bishkek - Osh highway will also begin, with the project parameters, including the exact length of the section for medium repair, currently being clarified.
