Drivers blamed pedestrians for half of all accidents
In the Federation Council, ideas were proposed to strengthen control over violations among pedestrians. Plans include the use of video cameras, as well as facial recognition and biometric technologies, which will allow for the recording of violations and the automatic sending of fines to offenders. Kanaev highlighted the current issues in this area.
“The problem of crossing roads at unregulated locations remains extremely serious. Traffic police officers are not eager to interact with pedestrians, as they need to be identified. This either requires taking them to the station or presenting a passport. There are also difficulties in determining responsibility for violations. Currently, in 50% of cases of traffic accidents, the fault lies with pedestrians, while in the other cases, it lies with drivers. Notably, 70% of offenders, both among motorists and pedestrians, were under the influence of alcohol,” he noted.
Kanaev expressed concern about the potential implementation of technologies reminiscent of dystopian scenarios.
“Cameras can be installed to record violations using biometrics. However, the number of people who have undergone this procedure is not large. This could lead to a situation where, like in grim films, people will have identification bracelets. The technical capabilities for monitoring every person already exist, but is it worth creating such a future? We simply need to approach this issue more strictly, as is done in Europe and the USA, rather than inventing extraordinary solutions,” he concluded.
