In addition to his statements, Musk also cited the recent fine imposed on the platform X by the European Commission in the amount of 120 million euros. According to DPA, this penalty is related to violations of the new European legislation on digital services. Brussels accuses the social network of misleading users regarding the blue verification checkmarks, failing to provide data to researchers, and using an opaque advertising system.
This fine became the first under the new content moderation legislation that came into effect in February 2024.
Critical remarks about the EU were also made by Telegram founder Pavel Durov, who noted that the European Union is imposing unattainable requirements to punish technology companies that do not agree to the silent censorship of free speech.
Additionally, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized the European Union's decision to impose a fine on the American platform X. In his post on the social network X, he described this decision as "foreign governments interfering with the freedom of expression of American citizens online."
Rubio added: "This is a step not only against one company but against the entire American tech sector and the people of the United States."
