_____________

Karakol is a city located in a picturesque mountainous area and is famous for two artificial lakes: Pioneer and Komsomol, as well as the "Quarry" dam on the Kainy River. Its history dates back to the 1960s.

The city was founded on June 16, 1962, as a settlement for hydro builders who were working on the construction of the Toktogul Hydroelectric Power Station — a crucial hydro facility in Central Asia. At that time, it was unofficially called Komsomolsk-on-Naryn.

The official name Karakol was assigned to the settlement on October 26, 1962, by the decision of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR, after which it was classified as an urban-type settlement.

An important event in the city's history occurred on January 7, 1977, when Karakol was granted the status of a city of regional subordination according to the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR and was included in the Osh region.

In the following years, the city underwent several administrative changes:

- On September 3, 1980, Karakol became part of the newly formed Talas region according to the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR No. 614-X.

- On December 14, 1990, due to the formation of the Jalal-Abad region, Karakol became part of the newly created administrative entity.

In June 2002, the city's name officially began to be written as Karakol in accordance with the resolution of the Legislative Assembly of the Jogorku Kenesh No. 830-II dated June 28, 2002, and the government resolution No. 711 dated October 22, 2003.

- In June 2008, according to the resolution of the Jogorku Kenesh, the spelling of settlements with a hyphen was restored, and the city was once again called Karakol.

Today, Karakol continues to develop as a significant regional center, surrounded by magnificent nature and the Toktogul Reservoir at the Kok-Bel pass.
