With a working visit to the Jalal-Abad region, the Minister of Energy of Kyrgyzstan, Talaybek Ibraev, officially commissioned the upgraded fourth hydro unit of the Toktogul HPP, as well as the second hydro unit of the Uch-Kurgan HPP.
The completion of the reconstruction of the fourth hydro unit of the Toktogul HPP has become an important event for the energy sector, according to a press release from the Ministry of Energy.
As reported by the department, the modernization has led to an increase in the station's capacity from 1200 MW to 1440 MW, which is an increase of 240 MW. The main goal of the modernization — to enhance the productivity of the HPP — has been successfully achieved.

The first hydro unit was commissioned on January 5, 1975. Its modernization began in March 2024 and was completed in November 2024. As a result, its capacity increased from 300 to 360 MW, which is an increase of 60 MW.
The second hydro unit, commissioned on January 6, 1975, also underwent modernization from March to November 2023, with an increase in capacity of 60 MW — from 300 to 360 MW.
As for the third hydro unit, it started operation in February 1977. Its upgrade is planned from March to November 2025, with a similar increase in capacity of 60 MW.
The fourth hydro unit, commissioned in March 1977, was modernized from March 2021 to November 2022, also with an increase in capacity of 60 MW.
Uch-Kurgan HPP
The reconstruction of the second hydro unit at the Uch-Kurgan HPP has been completed as part of the modernization and rehabilitation program for the country's hydropower facilities.
The upgrade work at the HPP began in 2024. The first hydro unit was completely replaced, and its capacity increased by 9 MW. The modernization of the second unit has now been completed with a similar increase. The upgrade of the remaining two hydro units is scheduled for 2026, which will increase the total capacity of the station by 36 MW after all work is completed.

The first hydro unit of the Uch-Kurgan HPP was commissioned on December 30, 1961, and its modernization will be completed in December 2026. The current capacity of the unit is 45 MW.
The second hydro unit was launched on June 3, 1962, and its upgrade is also planned to be completed in November 2026. The current capacity is 45 MW.
The third hydro unit started operation in September 1962. Its modernization will take place from March to November 2025, with an increase in capacity from 45 to 54 MW.
The fourth hydro unit, commissioned on November 5, 1962, will also be modernized from March to November 2024 with a similar increase in capacity.
As a result of all the modernization efforts, the total capacity of the Uch-Kurgan HPP, previously 180 MW, will increase to 198 MW, adding 18 MW.
