Gadgets, such as smartphones and tablets, are becoming not only a source of entertainment for children but also a kind of "nanny." However, behind the allure of screens lie serious issues concerning children's health and mental state, including deteriorating vision, delays in speech development, as well as increased anxiety and sleep disturbances.
Specialists from the Republican Center for Health Promotion and psychologist Polina Fursova discussed the need for strict control over gadget use and ways to prevent digital addiction in children.
Doctors' Opinions
According to medical professionals, prolonged time spent with gadgets can lead to worsening vision, delays in speech development, increased anxiety, sleep problems, and difficulties with concentration. It also negatively affects posture and physical condition, can cause headaches, and hinder socialization as well as the development of emotional intelligence.
Doctors assert that gadgets can be useful, but only with reasonable and limited use, especially for older children.

up to 2 years — complete ban;
from 2 to 5 years — no more than 1 hour a day;
from 6 to 18 years — up to 2 hours a day.
Specialists emphasize the importance of active play, outdoor walks, and joint activities with parents, which contribute to both the physical and mental development of the child.
Psychologist's Opinion
Polina Fursova mentioned in a recent interview that some educational applications can indeed help in developing memory, attention, and logical thinking, but their use must strictly adhere to age restrictions.
“For young children, it is extremely important that interaction with gadgets occurs under adult supervision. The screen should not become the primary source of learning or entertainment. From 0 to 3 years, a child's development primarily occurs through live communication and real experiences, so screen time at this age should be limited,” she added.

“It is important not just to take away the device, but to offer alternative activities — walks, sports, board games, joint creativity. It is effective to implement family rules that will be followed by all family members, including parents, such as refraining from gadgets at the table,” Fursova concluded.Experts unanimously agree that moderation, parental role modeling, and an emphasis on live communication and an active lifestyle are key factors for the safe use of digital devices.
