The Republican Center for Health Promotion has published advice on reducing the likelihood of injuries during icy conditions. In winter, there is a sharp increase in cases of bruises, sprains, and fractures, which can be prevented by following simple recommendations.
How to Avoid Falls on Slippery Streets
Doctors advise choosing routes with good lighting and minimal icy patches, as well as paths that are sanded. Special care should be taken on steps and manhole covers, which are the first to become icy. When climbing stairs, it is important to hold onto the handrail and place both feet on each step in conditions of severe ice.
Proper footwear is also critically important. It should have a stable, non-slip sole. High heels should be avoided. For those whose shoes are slippery, specialists recommend using ice grips or temporarily sticking adhesive tape crosswise on the sole.
For safe movement, it is better to take short steps, fully placing the entire foot down and avoiding sloped surfaces. Hands should not be hidden in pockets, as this makes it difficult to brace for a fall.
Recommendations for the Elderly and Pregnant Women
Elderly citizens are strongly advised to use a cane, and pregnant women should not go outside without accompaniment. The center emphasizes: “Moving on icy paths poses a danger both to the future mother and to the child, so accompaniment is necessary.”
Safety on the Street and in Public Transport
When crossing the street, pedestrian crossings should be used. Slipping increases the risk of falling, and the braking distance of vehicles during icy conditions becomes significantly longer. When exiting public transport, it is important to hold onto the handrails tightly, as attempts to catch a departing bus can lead to falling under the wheels.
Avoid Alcohol and Dangerous Areas
Alcohol reduces reaction time and sensitivity to pain, leading to frequent injuries and delays in seeking medical help. Specialists also warn against being near buildings with icicles or ice buildup.
The Republican Center for Health Promotion urges citizens to be especially careful during the winter period and to observe safety measures to protect their health and avoid injuries.
