In connection with the recent seismic events, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan has issued recommendations for citizens. It is important for everyone to have a "go-bag" ready, which is a set of necessary items for up to three days.

The agency noted that the "go-bag" can be in any convenient form: it can be a wheeled suitcase, a backpack, or a bag. Inside, there should be food, water supplies, warm clothing, medications, a flashlight, and a whistle for signaling in case of building collapses. It is also recommended to compile a list of contact numbers of relatives and addresses of assistance points in case communication is lost.

What should be included in the emergency kit?

Rules of conduct during an earthquake

The Ministry of Emergency Situations also highlighted key recommendations for behavior during an earthquake. It is important to remain calm, move away from windows and furniture, take cover, and leave the building only after the shaking has stopped. It is necessary to turn off gas, electricity, and water, grab the "go-bag," stay away from buildings and power lines, and assist children and the elderly.

It is prohibited to use elevators, stand near windows, jump from balconies, or start a fire during the shaking.

Preparing your home for an earthquake

Citizens are advised to securely fasten furniture and heavy objects, move beds away from windows, reinforce chandeliers, and replace latches on cabinets to prevent them from opening during tremors. Hazardous chemicals should be stored in safe places to avoid spillage or damage.

Actions in case of being trapped under debris

The Ministry of Emergency Situations also provided recommendations for those who find themselves trapped under debris: it is essential to remain calm and avoid sudden movements, waiting for rescuers to arrive. If the victim is within reach, first aid can be provided. Otherwise, do not attempt to move the person or structures on your own — this can lead to serious injuries, especially if there is a suspicion of spinal injury.
