How Magnesium, Zinc, and Copper Affect Sleep Quality: Research Results
The most notable connection was demonstrated by magnesium. Individuals with low levels of this element in their blood and a deficiency in their diet experienced a decline in sleep quality. This association remained significant even when accounting for factors such as age, gender, and body mass index, which may indicate its independent role in regulating sleep.
As for zinc, the results were somewhat different: higher serum zinc levels were associated with a lower likelihood of poor sleep, while a deficiency of this trace element significantly increased the risk of sleep disturbances. However, no correlation was found between zinc intake and sleep quality.
Unlike magnesium and zinc, copper did not show any connection to sleep quality, either from blood test results or dietary data. The authors of the study note that it is cross-sectional in nature and only identifies statistical associations. Further long-term and interventional studies are needed to establish causal relationships.
