A volcanic eruption occurred in northeastern Ethiopia at the Heyli-Gubbi volcano, which had been dormant for more than 10,000 years, reports RIA Novosti, citing information from VolcanoDiscovery.
This volcano is part of a mountain range in the Afar region and is located about 15 kilometers southeast of the active Ertale volcano.
According to satellite monitoring data, the eruption began at 08:30 Moscow time on Sunday and was accompanied by a powerful ash plume that rose to a height of about 10-15 kilometers, spreading over the southwestern part of the Arabian Peninsula.
The Ethiopian radio station FMC confirmed the presence of volcanic activity in the Ertale area. Witnesses reported that the explosion preceding the eruption was characterized by extraordinary strength and loudness.
Volcanologist Simon Carn noted on social media that throughout the history of Heyli-Gubbi, no eruptions have been recorded during the Holocene, which began more than 11,000 years ago.
