A volcano in Ethiopia has awakened after sleeping for more than ten thousand years

The eruption occurred at 08:30 Moscow time on Sunday and was accompanied by a powerful ash plume that reached heights of 10-15 kilometers and spread over the southwestern part of the Arabian Peninsula.

The volcano is located in the Afar region, in a mountain range approximately 15 kilometers southeast of the active Ertale volcano.

According to Ethiopian broadcaster FMC, volcanic activity in the Ertale area has been confirmed. Witnesses report an extraordinary strength and loudness of the explosion that accompanied the eruption.

Volcanologist Simon Carn noted on social media that Hayli-Gubbi has no recorded eruptions throughout the Holocene epoch, which began more than 11,000 years ago.
