The judge announced that the decision is final and cannot be appealed.
According to Brazilian law, Bolsonaro was placed in a 12-meter cell equipped with a separate bathroom, bed, chair, wardrobe, desk, television, mini-fridge, and air conditioning. These conditions are provided for officials with special privileges, reports O Globo.
Previously, until the end of November, the politician was under house arrest; however, on November 22, he was detained after his son Flavio called for a rally in defense of his father and due to the threat of escape when Bolsonaro attempted to remove his electronic bracelet with a soldering iron.
Bolsonaro served as president from January 1, 2019, to January 1, 2023.
After his defeat in the 2022 elections to Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro's supporters organized mass protests, during which police detained more than 1,600 people, over 200 of whom were convicted. Bolsonaro himself, while in the United States, did not publicly support the actions of the protesters.
In 2023, he faced charges of organizing a coup, and the Brazilian Supreme Electoral Court stripped him of the right to participate in elections until 2030.
Bolsonaro denies all charges. U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly defended the former president, calling his persecution a "witch hunt."
