Amid ongoing mass protests, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced his resignation. This was reported by Reuters.

This statement was made on December 11 after the parliament was supposed to consider a vote of no confidence in the cabinet.

Protests in Bulgaria began in response to the proposed budget, which implied a deficit of 3% of GDP, as well as tax increases and social contributions. Although the budget proposal was withdrawn, public discontent continued, and citizens began to criticize the government for its ineffectiveness in combating corruption.

The demands for the resignation of Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov were joined not only by the opposition bloc but also by the country's president, Rumen Radev. Zhelyazkov had previously stated that he did not wish to resign before Bulgaria transitions to the eurozone, scheduled for January 1, 2026.

The vote of no confidence, which was supposed to take place shortly after his statement, would have been the sixth since the beginning of 2025, when Zhelyazkov took over the government.
