A bill has been developed in Sweden aimed at prohibiting marriages between cousins, as well as not recognizing such unions contracted outside the country. This was reported by TASS.

The main goal of this bill is to combat oppression related to the concept of honor and other forms of pressure that may arise when entering into marriage.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer noted in a press release: “In our society, violence and oppression based on the concept of honor are absolutely unacceptable. While it is easy to talk about zero tolerance, this must be reflected in legislative acts. Ensuring the protection of women and girls, especially those under pressure related to the concept of honor, must be strengthened in both criminal and civil law. The ban on marriages between cousins is an important step towards ensuring everyone's right to control their own life.”

The document also emphasizes that for women and girls, such marriages can pose a risk of oppression due to family honor, as well as lead to social isolation and the strengthening of criminal structures based on kinship ties.
