According to local police, the criminals took advantage of the Christmas holidays when many banks and stores are closed from the evening of December 24. They drilled through a thick concrete wall of the vault and opened multiple individual safes, taking money and valuables.
The discovery of the hole in the wall only occurred early in the morning on Monday, December 29, after the fire alarm was triggered.
The next day, a large number of dissatisfied customers gathered at the bank, demanding access to their safes. One depositor told the Welt television channel in an interview that he couldn't sleep due to the lack of information about his savings, which he had kept in the vault for 25 years.
The police also reported that on Saturday evening, witnesses saw several men with large bags in the stairwell of a nearby multi-level parking garage. Additionally, early on Monday morning, a black Audi RS6 drove out of the garage with masked individuals inside. It was later revealed that the car's license plates belonged to a vehicle stolen in Hanover.
The investigation is ongoing, and the suspects have not yet been apprehended.
