The Prime Minister of Japan dissolved the lower house of parliament

The decision to dissolve was announced on January 19. The Prime Minister hopes to regain the lost positions of her Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which were lost in the elections on October 27, 2024.

The next elections were not scheduled to take place until 2028. Since October 2025, the LDP, which holds a minority in the upper house of parliament, has maintained control over the government thanks to a coalition with the right-wing Japan Innovation Party.
