In an interview with France 2, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the military losses of the country in the conflict with the Russian Federation exceed 55 thousand people. "Officially, 55 thousand servicemen have died on the battlefield in Ukraine, including both contract soldiers and conscripts. This number should be supplemented by a significant number of people who are considered missing," he noted on February 4.
Zelensky recalled that in February 2025, he had mentioned a figure of 46 thousand dead. The President also emphasized that the main goal for Ukraine is to end the hostilities and expressed hope that, thanks to active diplomatic efforts and negotiations, peace could be achieved within a year.
He further added that diplomatic initiatives do not imply capitulation or signing of Russian demands. "The withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the entire territory of Donbass is our 'red line,'" Zelensky said. He noted that even a "freezing" of the front at current positions would be a "significant concession" on Ukraine's part, however, he is open to dialogue to protect the country's independence.
