On the first day of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Italy, February 7, several acts of sabotage were recorded on the railway, leading to significant delays in train operations, reaching up to 2.5 hours. According to DW, an anti-terrorism unit has been involved in the investigation.

According to Italian law enforcement, the incidents occurred in three different locations in the northern part of the country. In the Pesaro area on the Adriatic coast, a distribution board was set on fire, in Bologna unknown individuals cut a cable responsible for controlling train speed, and a primitive explosive device was found on the section between Bologna and Padua.

The Italian state railway company Ferrovie dello Stato reported that the station in Bologna, an important transport artery for high-speed trains, was temporarily closed. Company representatives noted that technical malfunctions could not be the cause of the incidents.

The police anti-terrorism unit is actively investigating these incidents. According to a law enforcement representative, all three acts appear to be interconnected; however, at this time, no terrorist group has claimed responsibility for these actions.

Bologna plays a crucial role as a railway hub connecting the north and south of Italy and serves as a main route for trains heading to the host cities of the 2026 Olympics, such as Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

By the end of the day, train operations in the country were gradually being restored. The Italian Ministry of Transport characterized the events as a "serious case of sabotage."
