75 deputies voted for the dismissal of Jeri, while 24 opposed it, and three abstained. José Jeri had held the position of interim president since October 10, 2025, following the removal of Dina Boluarte amid rising crime in the country. His departure from office marks another stage in a prolonged political crisis that has been ongoing since 2016 and has already led to the replacement of seven presidents in Peru.
The investigation was prompted by a leak of information regarding an unofficial meeting Jeri had in December with two Chinese businessmen: one of whom has active contracts with the government, while the other is involved in a case concerning illegal logging. Jeri denies the allegations, asserting that the discussions were related to a cultural event.
Currently, the parliament is required to elect a new interim president from among its deputies. This new leader will serve as head of state until July 28, when power will be transferred to the elected candidate from the elections scheduled for April 12. José Jeri will return to work in Congress until the current term ends.
The voting on the candidacies for the new interim president is scheduled for Wednesday, after the parliamentary factions register their candidates.
