On March 8, the Iranian agency Mehr reported that the Assembly of Experts has completed the selection of a new Supreme Leader for the country.

It is expected that the name of the new leader will be announced by Hosseini Bushehri, who heads the secretariat of the Assembly of Experts, but no official statements have been made at this time.

The Assembly of Experts consists of 88 theologians specializing in Islamic law, and they are the ones authorized to elect the Supreme Leader of Iran.

The elections took place against the backdrop of tragic events: Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 as a result of attacks by the U.S. and Israel on Iranian territory.

On the morning of February 28, Israel and the United States carried out strikes on Iran. Donald Trump announced his intention to destroy the nuclear program of the Islamic Republic.

In response to the aggression, Iran began striking Israeli and American targets in other countries in the Middle East, including Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai (UAE), as well as Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).

As a result of the American-Israeli attack, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed. Later, his wife, Mansoureh Khojasteh, died from injuries sustained during the attack following the tragedy.

Trump stated that the military operation in Iran would last approximately four weeks. Iran declared jihad against the U.S. and Israel, emphasizing its unwillingness to negotiate.

The situation in the region has impacted the global arena, including Kyrgyzstan, where thousands of tourists are currently stranded due to the conflict in the UAE. Contacts for Kyrgyz citizens abroad can be found here.
