The Iranian ambassador was handed a note of protest
The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an exclave of Azerbaijan, became the target of Iranian drones. According to information from the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, one of the drones landed on the territory of the airport, while another landed near a school in the village of Shakerabad. In connection with the incident, the Iranian ambassador in Baku, Mojtaba Demirchilu, was summoned to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as stated in an official announcement published on March 5.
The authorities in Baku expressed concern over the "violation of international law" and the growing tension in the region. "We demand that the Islamic Republic of Iran provide clear explanations, conduct a thorough investigation, and take urgent steps to prevent such attacks in the future," the ministry stated. It was also noted that Azerbaijan reserves the right to take adequate retaliatory measures.
According to the Azerbaijani publication Minval, the strike was carried out using Shahed-136 model drones. Videos taken by witnesses show columns of black smoke rising above the airport.
Nakhchivan International Airport is located just 10 kilometers from the Iranian border.
It is worth noting that on February 28, the USA and Israel began airstrikes on Iranian territory. US President Donald Trump announced the intention to destroy the Iranian nuclear program and called on the Iranian army to lay down their arms, while urging the citizens of the country to "take their fate into their own hands."
As a result of these attacks, according to Iranian state media reports from March 4, more than 1,000 people were killed in the country. The death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking military officials has been confirmed. In response, Iran attacked Israel and several countries in the Persian Gulf, with reports of casualties. Tehran claims that its actions are directed against US military bases, not against Arab states. On March 4, information was received about the interception of a missile heading from Iran towards Turkey.
