President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev commented on issues regarding the role of the Russian language in the country.
At the III Republican Forum of Deputies of All Levels in Astana, the head of state addressed citizens' concerns that the status of the Russian language in the new Constitution might be diminished.
“Discussions about the alleged reduction of the status of the Russian language in the draft of the new Constitution are amusing. You read such articles, full of stylistic and grammatical errors, and you are amazed at how their authors advocate for the Russian language while not mastering it properly. It is important to note that the publication of the text of the new Constitution in Kazakh and Russian, which have equal legal force, speaks volumes and does not require additional comments,” Tokayev noted.
Earlier, during discussions of the draft of the new Fundamental Law, there were reports of a proposal to replace one word in the text: instead of “on par,” the new version of the document suggested using “alongside.” This sparked debates in society and among experts regarding the impact of this change on the status of the Russian language.
