Iranians suffer from both external military strikes and internal repression

The UN is concerned about the dual pressure on the civilian population

At a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, the issue of human rights in Iran was discussed in the context of the ongoing regional crisis. Participants in the interactive dialogue noted that civilians are facing dual pressure: military actions and internal repression are having a devastating impact on them.

Sara Hussein, head of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission, emphasized that the civilian population suffers from both external attacks and repression by the Iranian authorities. According to her, the escalation of conflicts occurred at a time when the people had just begun to recover from "unprecedented violence."

Particularly alarming was the information about casualties among the civilian population. Specifically, on the first day of the military operation by the US and Israel, a strike was carried out on a school in the city of Minab, resulting in the deaths of more than 168 people, the majority of whom were children.

The mission continues to monitor possible violations of international humanitarian law and gather evidence, emphasizing the importance of adherence to norms protecting civilians by all parties to the conflict.

May Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, also highlighted that the main burden of the conflict falls on the shoulders of civilians. She noted the increase in civilian casualties, destruction of infrastructure, mass migrations, and difficulties in accessing essential services, including the internet.

UN experts are calling on the international community to pay special attention to the protection of civilians and the observance of human rights amid the escalating conflict.
