From November 7 to 9, the World Sambo Championship took place in Bishkek, gathering the strongest athletes from around the world. As a result of the competition, the Kyrgyzstan team finished in third place in the overall standings.
Kyrgyz sambo wrestlers brought home five medals: two gold, one silver, and two bronze.
The Russian team, competing under a neutral flag, took first place, while Kazakhstan secured second.
Championship titles in their weight categories were won by Daniil Asekov and Bekbolot Toktogonov, who contributed gold medals to the team's tally.
The silver medal went to Elkhan Orozaliyev, while bronze medals were earned by Usun kyzy Akak and Meerimai Nuradilova.
At the closing ceremony, the president of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), Vasily Shestakov, noted the high level of organization of the tournament and its importance for the development of the sport:
“Holding the World Championship in Bishkek once again demonstrated the global growth and universality of sambo. We are witnessing the strengthening of traditional schools and the emergence of new strong countries. It is especially encouraging to see the development of Paralympic sambo — the successes of blind athletes from Iran, Mongolia, and Moldova confirm that sambo is accessible to everyone.”
The championship included three disciplines: sports sambo, combat sambo, and sambo for the visually impaired (class SVI-1), with a total of 31 sets of medals contested.
This event became one of the most significant in the world of sambo over the year and reaffirmed Kyrgyzstan's status as one of the leading countries in this martial art.
