Kyrgyzstanis want to extend the New Year holidays until January 12

The Ministry of Labor, Social Security and Migration has presented a draft resolution regarding the extension of the New Year holidays in 2026 until January 12 for public discussion.

According to the proposal, the working days of January 8 and 9, 2026, are planned to be moved to Saturdays — February 7 and April 25, which will allow Kyrgyzstanis to enjoy a longer vacation.

As noted by the ministry, this initiative aims to optimize the use of holiday and weekend days, as well as to create more comfortable social and economic conditions at the beginning of the new year.

According to the department, the goal of extending the holidays is to address several important tasks:

— reducing the level of seasonal illnesses, which typically increases in the first weeks of January;

— providing opportunities for parents and children to spend time together, considering that winter holidays for schoolchildren in 2026 will last until January 12;

— promoting the development of domestic tourism and supporting small and medium-sized businesses during the peak winter season;

— reducing the load on the energy grid and utility services in the context of winter electricity shortages.

The Ministry of Labor emphasizes that extending the holidays will not require additional budget expenditures and will not necessitate changes to other regulatory acts.
