As of today, there are 815 thousand people registered as pensioners in Kyrgyzstan. This was reported by Bakhtiyar Aliyev, the chairman of the Social Fund, during a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh on December 25.

According to his forecasts, by 2030 the number of pensioners in the country will exceed 1 million.

“If the number of elderly people constitutes between 4 to 7 percent of the total population, the country begins to be considered aging. When this figure exceeds 7 percent, the nation is considered old. Currently, in Kyrgyzstan, the share of elderly people is about 6 percent, and over the next 10 years we will surpass this threshold,” noted Bakhtiyar Aliyev.

He also pointed out that to ensure pension payments, there should be three working-age individuals for each pensioner. However, in Kyrgyzstan, this ratio is only 0.9.

“Moreover, a significant number of citizens work ‘in the shadows’ and do not make insurance contributions. According to the National Statistical Committee, there are about 1 million such individuals. Last year, we reduced the rates to 12 percent, and according to the State Tax Service, after that, 58 thousand people came ‘out of the shadows,’” added the head of the Social Fund.
