Medina Bekturova, the new heroine of our "Our People Abroad" section, has been living in Naples, Italy for over a year.

She was born in 2001 in the village of Temir-Kanat, located in the Ton district of the Issyk-Kul region. In 2023, Medina graduated from the Kyrgyz National University.

“In Italy, I do cleaning and take care of a child. My desire to leave the country is connected to my love for travel and discovering new horizons. When I graduated from university, I didn’t have enough funds to travel. If I had stayed in Kyrgyzstan and tried to save money, it would have taken a long time. So I chose a job that allows me to travel at the same time,” Medina said.

She emphasized that Italy is famous not only for its well-known brands but also for its delicious pizza and pasta, unique architecture, rich history, and stunning nature.

“Italians are very kind and open. In Kyrgyzstan, people often look gloomy. Here, even strangers smile, and I really like that. The climate in Naples is humid, as the city is located by the bay, especially noticeable in the summer,” she noted.

Medina was also impressed by the Italian nature and architecture. “Even ordinary apartment buildings look stylish. When I first arrived, all the buildings seemed like real palaces. Now I have gotten used to it and can distinguish their features. The local nature is simply mesmerizing. Its beauty leaves no one indifferent. I was also surprised by the narrow streets – they are much narrower than in Kyrgyzstan, and that is surprising,” she added.

Unfortunately, there were also misunderstandings. “Often, when greeting Italians in the morning, I mistakenly said ‘good evening.’ There were times when, upon meeting acquaintances, I would nervously say ‘hello’ (in Italian ‘Pronto’), and then I would feel awkward,” Bekturova shared.

“Every day is full of surprises for me. I constantly learn something new about the lives of the locals: how they live, spend their day, raise children, how they dress, and what they eat. This is very interesting to me,” she added.

Despite the fact that there are many Kyrgyz people in Naples, it is often difficult to gather them all in one place. “I meet with friends during holidays, and it really helps when I miss my homeland. We can speak in our native language, and that significantly lifts my spirits,” Medina said.

In her free time, she enjoys blogging, spending time shooting and editing videos. “On weekends, I attend language courses, and I also love exploring historical places and learning new things. In the future, I see myself as a blogger,” she shared.

Medina does not rule out returning to Kyrgyzstan to engage in entrepreneurship.
