Our People Abroad: Aydana Almazbekova Became a Flight Attendant and Lives in a Country Where the Price of "Makhra" Reaches 25 Thousand Dollars
In an interview with a Turmush correspondent, she shared that she was born in the city of Karakol in the Issyk-Kul region in 1994. She graduated from the Issyk-Kul State University named after Kasym Tynystanov in Karakol with a degree in "Russian Philology and Foreign Languages." By profession, she is an English teacher.
“In 2024, there was an interview in Bishkek, and my friend Aydana inspired me to try, giving me a lot of motivation. In the first round, they tested our English. In the second round, we were given various situations, divided into groups, and observed how we communicated with others. It was important not to elevate oneself, to listen to others' opinions, and to be able to work in a team. I was happy with each round I passed. In the end, those who passed were invited in, while the others were sent off with the words: ‘Try again next time.’ I have been working here for almost a year. The locals are very hospitable, just like the Kyrgyz, always ready to help, never refuse if you ask for assistance,” she said.
Here, I was very surprised by the high cost of "mahr" (wedding gift), as a lot of money is spent on weddings. The average cost of mahr in Saudi Arabia is about 20–25 thousand dollars (around 2.19 million soms).
The expenses for the wedding itself are also significant. On average, the celebration can cost 30–35 thousand dollars (about 3 million soms). In some cases, wedding expenses can reach 50–100 thousand dollars or even more. The costs especially rise sharply if the celebration is held in elite hotels, with the participation of famous artists and with guest numbers ranging from 500 to 1000 people.
On the roads, people follow the rules and do not interfere with the authorities. In our country, one can talk about power, but here everyone is busy with their own affairs. In banks, even if there is a queue, people do not panic or rush; they are a very patient people,” she says.
Aydana shared memories of interesting cases from her workdays. “Passengers were just boarding the plane. One person approached me and anxiously asked, ‘I feel unwell, do you have any medicine?’ I politely replied, ‘Unfortunately, we cannot give passengers medicine. If you really feel bad, we will remove you from the flight and transfer your ticket to another day. You can only fly after you recover.’
At that moment, he immediately exclaimed, ‘No-no, I’m fine, everything is great!’ — and he instantly cheered up. This story still brings a smile to my face. Despite living in Saudi Arabia, I do not lose touch with my compatriots. We have a separate group consisting of Kyrgyz. We help and support each other. Sometimes we cook national Kyrgyz dishes, invite each other over, distract ourselves, and lift our spirits,” the girl reported.
Almazbekova considers herself a happy person who grew up in a large family. “Since my parents divorced, I lived in my aunt's house until I was five. There, I grew up with two older sisters, one younger sister, and one younger brother. Later, when I finished the 11th grade, my mother took me to live with her and gave me another younger sister. Now she is very small, my beloved little sister. On my father's side, I also have three younger sisters and one younger brother. Each of them holds a special place in my heart. My dream is to become a happy wife and return to Kyrgyzstan to engage in charity work. I especially want to help children who have lost their parents and implement educational projects that will bring them hope and warmth.
Being a ‘caring older sister’ for the little ones in orphanages is a great happiness for me. I strive not just to provide material help but to give warmth to their souls so that they feel that there is love and faith in life,” she says.
