According to information, the Iranian football team may face disciplinary measures from FIFA if it decides not to participate in the upcoming World Cup.
The President of the Football Federation of Iran, Mehdi Taj, previously expressed doubts about his country's participation in the tournament, noting that Iran "cannot optimistically await the World Cup."
According to FIFA rules, national federations are not allowed to withdraw from competitions after confirming their participation. In the event of withdrawal from the tournament, the federation will be required to return all funds allocated by FIFA for preparation and may be fined between 275,000 and 555,000 euros.
Additionally, FIFA's disciplinary committee has the right to impose further sanctions, including suspension from future international tournaments.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed indifference regarding Iran's participation in the World Cup.
The Iranian national team has participated in six World Cups, including tournaments in Brazil, Russia, and Qatar. In the 2026 World Cup, the Iranian team is set to play in Group G against the teams of New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt.
