The situation with bears in Akita Prefecture has become critical, and Governor Kenta Suzuki has turned to the army for help. He noted that local authorities are unable to cope with the growing threat without military support.
In recent weeks, there have been constant reports of bears appearing near populated areas.
According to information from Japan's Ministry of Health, since April 1 of this year, nine people have died as a result of bear attacks, and about one hundred have been injured. While awaiting military assistance, the prefecture is taking urgent measures such as setting up additional traps and using repellent spray on routes near schools.
An official acknowledged that bear attack incidents are being observed throughout the prefecture, and the situation has already spiraled out of control.
