A new plant for the production of silicon alloys has opened in the Karaganda region, as reported by tengrinews.kz. This is an important step for Kazakhstan, which currently lacks production capacities for high-purity silicon, unlike the Soviet era when such plants existed in Kyrgyzstan. The fate of that enterprise, known as the "Kristall" plant, remains unknown.

Although a plant for the production of metallurgical silicon is already operating in Karaganda, its volumes are still insignificant. However, with the growth of digital technologies and artificial intelligence, the demand for polycrystalline and monocrystalline silicon will increase, which will require large amounts of electricity. These needs can be met through alternative sources, for which high-purity silicon is essential, explains Talgat Makaev.

Silicon is also used in medicine, construction, and the food industry. In the event of a successful launch of the silicon cluster, it is planned to produce various types of silicon at each stage, which will be in demand across many sectors. Additionally, the project includes the development of its own energy infrastructure.
