Almasadam Satkaliyev, head of the Atomic Energy Agency of Kazakhstan, announced the timeline for the start of pouring the "first concrete" for the country's first nuclear power plant.

As specified by Tengrinews.kz, the minister noted that specific deadlines have not yet been determined; however, the agency is aiming for 2029 according to the Russian schedule.

“Much depends on the design work and the composition of the equipment. Next year, design and survey work will continue. It is important to note that the construction of a nuclear power plant is a complex technological process that requires in-depth study and careful preparation. Currently, this work is being carried out with the involvement of Kazakh contractors,” the minister added.

An important milestone will be the approval in February 2025 of the site for the construction of the nuclear power plant, which will be located in the village of Ulken in the Zhambyl district of the Almaty region, less than 250 kilometers from the border with Kyrgyzstan. The first nuclear power plant will be named "Balqash Nuclear Power Plant."

In August, a capsule was laid to mark the start of construction, and work began on site selection, soil analysis, and preparation of project documentation.

In addition, China plans to build a second and third nuclear power plant in the Almaty region and near the Caspian Sea. This issue is currently under discussion.
