The construction of a small-capacity nuclear power plant in Mongolia could take a central place in Russian-Mongolian interaction for many years to come. This was stated by Sergey Demin, head of the Rosatom representative office in Mongolia, at the seminar "Nuclear Energy: A Step into the Future," TASS reports.

According to Demin, the development of partnership in the field of nuclear energy with Mongolia appears to be very promising and significant. He is confident that the implementation of the small modular reactor (SMR) project in the country could become a key element in the long-term cooperation between the two states. "One of the main advantages of Russian technologies is their proven reliability and efficiency, which has already been demonstrated in practice," he added.

The main task, according to him, is the necessity of signing an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the construction of the SMR in Mongolia. Among the possible locations for the project, the area where the new city of New Kharkhorum is planned to be created, located on the site of the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, is being considered.

Demin also noted that there are currently 70 small nuclear power plant projects in the world, but only Rosatom offers reference solutions. "The RITM-200 reactors that we propose to Mongolia are modern technologies that have proven themselves on nuclear icebreakers in the harsh conditions of the Arctic," concluded the Rosatom representative.
